    French Fourth Republicball

French Fourth Republicball was a modern republican régime of the France-icon.png French nation created after WW2.

    History[edit | edit source]

Post World War 2 (1946-1956)[edit | edit source]

French Fourth Republicball was created following the successful unification of Free France-icon.png Free Franceball and Vichy France-icon.png Vichy Franceball after the Second World War. In 1947, using Nazi-icon.png Nazi Germanyball's remains it was able to establish a Sperate Saar Protectorate that would be administered by its and act as a separate Saar Protectorate-icon.png entity from ReichRawr-icon.png ReichRawr. French Fourth Republic Ball had both high hopes and plans for Saar Protectorate-icon.png Saar Protectorateball to become legally part of France, this would would all come ahead in the form of a referendum where it was given the option to join the fourth republic or reunite with Germany, much to France's dismay it chose to go back to Germany and in 1957 it did just that. Despite suffering from serious political dysfunction French Fourth Republicball experienced great economic growth, Les Trente Glorieuses ('The Glorious Thirty') was the high prosperity era from 1945 to 1975. In 1944, De Gaulle introduced a dirigiste economic policy, which included substantial state-directed control over a capitalist economy, which was followed by 30 years of unprecedented growth. USA-icon.png USAball helped revive the French economy with the Marshall Plan, where it gave France $2.3 billion with no repayment. France was the second largest recipient after Britain. The total of all American grants and credits to France from 1946 to 1953 amounted to $4.9 billion. It provided urgently needed funding for modernizing the transport systems, electricity generation, and basic industries, especially cement, coal, and steel. It required a modernization of French industrial and managerial systems, free trade, and friendly economic relations with Germany-icon.png West Germanyball. After a mass expulsion of communists, In 1949 French Fourth Republicball became one of the founding members of NATO-icon.png NATOball. By then France had taken the leadership position of unifying western Europe, working closely with the newly unified Germany-icon.png West Germanyball it wanted to establish much better relations and greater ties after decades of warfare so west Europe could pose a greater defense against communism. These happy times however would not last, for there was an ongioing conflict in the clay of what was French Indochina-icon.png French Indochinaball that was ramping up its severity.

First idnochina war (1946-1954)[edit | edit source]

By 1949 France's colonial empire was starting to dissolve and there was no better place to kickstart this process than in French Indochina-icon.png French Indochinaball. In 1940 Japanese-Empire-icon.png Empire of Japanball invaded French Indochina-icon.png French Indochinaball and set up a puppet state known as Empire of Vietnam-icon.png Empire of Vietnamball. while Vietnam-icon.png many opposed the Japanese occupation (to the point of insurgence), it was the first in a LONG time that the people of the Indochina region were given the ability to (mostly) rule themselves, in return it reignited the desire to many for independence. Japanese-Empire-icon.png Japanball allowed the Việt Minh and other nationalist groups to take over public buildings and weapons without resistance. Ho Chi Minh-icon.png Hồ Chí Minh was able to persuade Emperor Bảo Đại to abdicate. Bảo Đại was appointed "supreme advisor" to the new Việt Minh-led government in Hanoi. Within two weeks, forces under the Việt Minh had seized control of most rural villages and cities throughout the North, Central and South Vietnam, including Hanoi, where President Ho Chi Minh-icon.png Hồ Chí Minh announced the formation of the Provisional Democratic Republic. On September 2 1945 Ho Chi Minh-icon.png Ho Chi Minh declared Vietnamese Independence, the August Revolution sought to create a Việt Minh unified regime for the entire country. With Japanese-Empire-icon.png Empire of Japanball being successfully defeated by the allies, Japan had its' colonies and occupied territories stripped by various treaties including French Indochina-icon.png French Indochinaball. By then parts of what was formally Empire of Vietnam-icon.png Empire of Vietnamball were controlled by Vietnam-icon.png North Vietnamball. Taiwan-icon.png Chinaball occupied Vietnam as far south as the 16th parallel to accept the surrender of Japanese forces occupying that area and then to supervise the disarming and repatriation of the Japanese Army. After a brief squabble between Taiwan-icon.png Chinaball and France-icon.png Franceball the Chinese troops left and France took the opportunity to take back jurisdiction over the area. Franceball wanted to maintain control over its crumbling colony and stay relevant in the world stage so keeping French Indochina-icon.png French Indochinaball was its highest priority. Fighting broke out in Haiphong between Vietnam-icon.png North Vietnamball and France-icon.png Franceball over a conflict of interest in import duty, on November 23 1946 the French fleet bombarded the Vietnamese sections of the city killing 6,000 Vietnamese civilians in one afternoon. The Việt Minh quickly agreed to a cease-fire and left the cities. This was known as the Haiphong incident, it would then directly lead to the battle of Hanoi, a battle which French won with their superiority in firepower. This advantage caused Viet Minh forces to withdraw to the mountains 80 miles to the north of the city.

Collapse of another Republic (1956-1958)[edit | edit source]

The final nail in the coffin came in the form of the Algerian War. What caused such a conflict to break out was French Algeria2-icon.png French Algeriaball wanting to become independent from France and become Algeria-icon.png Algeriaball. The only problem with this idea was that Franceball saw French Algeria2-icon.png French Algeriaball as an integral part of Métropole. the French Military in response to the threat of separatism would fight a war against Algerian militants, the war led to thousands of casualties on each side and introduced the use of chemical warfare on both civilians and armed rebels who went by the FLN. The situation was complicated by those living in Algeria such as the Pieds-Noirs (Ethnic French born in Algeria), who wanted to remain a part of France, in doing so making the Algerian War became not just a separatist movement but also elements of a civil war. Further complications came when a section of the French Army rebelled and openly backed the 'Algérie française' movement to defeat separation. Revolts and riots broke out in 1958 against the French government in Algiers, but there were no adequate and competent political initiatives by the French government in support of military efforts to end the rebellion owing to party politics. The feeling was widespread that another debacle like that of Indochina in 1954 was in the offing and that the government would order another precipitous pullout and sacrifice French honor to political expediency. This prompted General Jacques Massu to create a French settlers' committee to demand the formation of a new national government under General De Gaulle, who was a national hero and had advocated a strong military policy, nationalism and the retention of French control over Algeria. General Massu, who had gained prominence and authority when he ruthlessly suppressed Algerian militants, famously declared that unless General De Gaulle was returned to power, the French Army would openly revolt; General Massu and other senior generals covertly planned the takeover of Paris with 1,500 paratroopers preparing to take over airports with the support of French Air Force units. Armored units from Rambouillet prepared to roll into Paris. On 24 May, French paratroopers from the Algerian corps landed on Corsica, taking the French island in a bloodless action called Opération Corse. Operation Resurrection would be implemented if De Gaulle was not approved as leader by the French Parliament, if De Gaulle asked for military assistance to take power, or to thwart any organized attempt by the French Communist Party to seize power or stall De Gaulle's return. this was all too much to handle for France-icon.png French Fourth Republicball as in response the government collapsed. It was revived by Charles de Gaulle who set up a new fifth republic as the France-icon.png Franceball we know today.
