The lingua franca of the indigenous population used to be Runa Simi (Quechua), with the Catholic Church translating texts into the language for its used in the territory. A portion of the Spanish population learned the language for easier communication with the indigenous. After the Rebellion of Túpac Amaru II, the use of the language was banned by the colonial administration prohibiting all literature written on the Quechua language.
