Not to be confused with Hanball.

Da Hanball or Chen Hanball was a short-lived state proclaimed by Red Turban warlord Chen Youliang (陳友諒). Da Hanball bordered Yuanball, Wuball, and Ming Xiaball at its zenith,[1] directly after Chen proclaimed it, as it would endure years of defeat at the hands of Wuball. Still, Da Hanball contested control over Central China between itself and its aforementioned neighbors until it was anschlussed by Wuball in 1364.

    History

    Background

By the 14th Century, Yuanball's power in Southern China waned as incompetent emperors succeeded one after another. Infighting and conflict of interests vitiated remaining Yuanball generals' attempts to save the dynastyball.

Chen Youliang served as a minor Yuan general and official, but rebelled in 1351 to join the Red Turban Rebellion.[2]

Under the Red Turban Tianwenball regime, Chen proved himself capable and grew his prestige by capturing strategic cities such as Anqingball, Longxingball, and Ruizhouball.[3]

    Establishment & Heyday

After being a prominent figure in Red Turban politics for 9 years, Chen assassinated Tianwenball's emperor (Xu Shouhui (徐壽輝)) and proclaimed himself emperor in Jiangzhou, renaming his faction to Da Hanball.[4]

The Red Turban commander in Sichuanball, Ming Yuzhen (明玉珍), refused to acknowledge Da Hanball and declared himself emperor of Xiaball.[5]

    Abolishment

Over the next couple of years, Da Hanball was repeatedly defeated by Wuball's armies, both on land and at sea, losing control of the capital Jiangzhou entirely, and was forced to recuperate at Wuchang. Da Hanball was constantly losing officers and territory to Wuball, and, in 1363, its first emperor was killed by an arrow amid fleeing the Battle of Lake Poyang.[6]

Da Hanball's second emperor, Chen Li (陳理), was unable to resist Zhu Yuanzhang's armies for much longer, surrendering the capital of Da Hanball, Wuchangball, in February of 1364.[7]
