Haikouball is the chief-town and the most populated cityball of Hainanball, Chinaball.
It is situated on the northern coast of Hainanball, by the mouth of the Nandu river. The northern part of the city is the district of Haidian Islandball, which is separated from the main part of Haikouball by the Haidian river, a branch of Nanduball.
History
Etymology of the name
Haikou means "seaport", composed of:
- Hǎi (海) for "ocean" or "sea";
- Kǒu (口) for "mouth".
Original activities
Haikouball was originally the port for Qiongshanball, the ancient administrative capital of of Hainan Islandball, located at least 5 kilometeres (or 3.1 miles) inland to the southeast. During its early history, Haikouball was na part of Guangdongball, a province.
In the 13th century, it was fortified and became a military under Ming Dynastyball. The port was at the Nuandu river's mouth. Even if the city does not have favorable natural conditions, the port is still always the most important of Haikouball.
More challenging times
When Qiongshanball opened itself to domestic trade after the Tianjin treaty in 1876, Haikouball started to be against him and surpassed the stock in 1930.
Under the Japanese island's surveillance during the Sino-Japanese war, the port activity UPPED. Since 1949, the port ensures than the HALF of the trades.
