History

Founding

Artashatball was officially born as a 2ball, but soon was given an identity by Ancient Armeniaball in the year 185 B.C.. In later years, he was adopted by SPQRball, Parthiaball, Persiaball, Russian Empireball, Transcaucasiaball, Sovietball and Armeniaball. The others kept dying out or being taken over by kebab. He becames 3 villageballs for First Republic of Armeniaball in 1918, then was raionball of Armenian SSRball and now modern Armeniaball as city.

Antiquity

King Artashes founded Artashatball in 185 BC in the Vostan Hayotsball canton within the historical province of Ayraratball, at the point where Araks river was joined by Metsamor river during that ancient eras, near the heights of Khor Virap.

In 449, just before the Battle of Avarayr, the city witnessed the "Artashatball Council" where the political and religious leaders of Christian Armeniaball gathered to discuss the threats of the Persiaball's king Yazdegerd. However, after losing its status as a capital to Vagharshapatball and later Dvinball, Artashatball gradually lost its significance.

The exact location of ancient Artashatball was identified during the 1920s, with archaeological excavations beginning in 1970. The archaeological site of Ancient Artashatball is 8 kilometres south of the modern city of Artashatball, near the monastery of Khor Virap.

Modern history

The modern town of Artashatball was founded by the Soviet government in 1945 as an urban community, with the merger of three villages: Upper Ghamarluball, Lower Ghamarluball and Novruzluball, with Upper Ghamarluball being the largest one. It was named after the historical city of Artashatball, located 8 km northwest of the modern town.

Until the 1920s, Upper Ghamarluball had many small manufacturers of Armenian cognac. During the Sovietball, the town has gradually grown as an industrial hub, mainly in the sphere of food-processing and building materials production. In 1970, Artashatball was given the status of a "city of republican subordination" within the Armenian SSRball.

In 1995, with the new law of the territorial administration of the Republic of Armeniaball, Artashatball became the provincial centre of the newly formed Ararat Provinceball.
