Qarmatiansball was an historical Islamic group, it considered the Pilgrimage to Meccaball a superstition and opposed it. They were seen as very egalitarian in terms of government.
History[edit | edit source]
Qarmatiansball broke off from mainstream Ismailism after groups claiming Abd Allah al-Mahdi Billah was the Mahdi of Islam became more powerful.
Abu Sa'id al-Jannabi, a Qarmatian Persian from Jannaba, conquered al-Hasa and the city of Hajr, which he established as the capital of a new Qarmatian theocracy.
Due to viewing the pilgrimage to Mecca as heretical, various raids were launched upon pilgrim routes, even managing to kill 20,000 pilgrims in one raid in 906.
Under al-Jannabi (ruled 923–944), the Qarmaṭians came close to capturing Baghdad in 927, and sacked Mecca and Medina in 930. In their attack on Islam's holiest sites, the Qarmatians desecrated the Zamzam Well with corpses of Hajj pilgrims and took the Black Stone from Mecca to Ain Al Kuayba in Qatif. Holding the Black Stone to ransom, they forced the Abbasids to pay a huge sum for its return in 952.
