Zhu Chuball or simply Chuball was a short-lived empire declared by agrarian leader Zhu Can (朱粲) in Hubeiball during the collapse of Suiball.[3] Zhu Chuball's territory was in a constant state of fluctuation until it submitted to Tangball in 619.

    History

    Background

Despite Suiball's achievements, its populace grew increasingly restless day by day as Suiball continued to conscript more men into perilous wars against Goguryeoball. Agrarian revolts became so organised and frequent enough, that, by 614, Suiball's forces could not reliably defeat them.[4]

The nonperformance of Suiball's army marked the rise of various prominent local warlords, like Zhu Can, Zhu Chuball's founder and first emperor. Zhu was from Bozhou, Anhuiball. Before rebelling, Zhu served Suiball in his home province, but rebelled later on.

From 615, Zhu led his faction Westward and drifted between various counties within Hubeiball, Hunanball, and Shaanxiball. Zhu's incessant massacres are notorious.[5][6] In 618, Zhu submitted to warlord Wang Shichong (王世充) and was subsequently ennobled as the Prince of Chuball (楚王).[7]

    Establishment

Despite Zhu's nominal allegiance to Wang Zhengball, Zhu claimed emperorship later in 618, naming his state Chuball.[8] By some estimates, Zhu's combined forces had grown to over 200,000.[9]

    Defeat & Abolishment

In 619, Zhu Chuball was attacked from a coalition of cities. After this defeat, Zhu Can fled and decided to submit to Tangball, thereby effectively abolishing Zhu Chuball. Zhu Can later submitted to Wang Zhengball, but was executed by Tangball's Emperor Gaozu after Wang Shichong was captured.[10]
