Barret and his comppanions were welcomed to Ngamotu by a Maoriball tribe called Āti Awa. They were welcomed because they brought with them cannons and muskets and helped the Āti Awa with their war with Maoriball from Waikatoball. However, after a bloody encounter near New Plymouth, most of the Āti Awa and Barret headed south towards Kapiti and Marlboroughball.
