Mujahideen against the 
Soviet Unionball who intervened on behalf of 
DR Afghanistanball. The war began in the year 1979 when Soviet troops landed in DR Afghanistanball and quickly took over the government, urban centers, cities, communication lines, and other vital positions while preparing for incursions into the rural countryside where the Mujahideen were hiding out. The Mujahideen were pushed to the mountains and was backed into a corner, but they waged a successful guerrilla war that strained Sovietball greatly and depleted too many of its economic resources as the war dragged on.
Since this was during the Cold War, 
USAball and 
UKball got involved in the war and supplied the Mujahideen against Sovietball and the 
Communist DR Afghan government and later, 
Pakistanball and 
Saudi Arabiaball got involved for Pan-Islamic cooperation. 
Chinaball also got involved and supported Maoist groups in Afghanistan. By 1986, Sovietball had outgrown its economy and planned for a withdrawal from Afghanistan which began in 1987 and was accomplished in 1989. DR Afghanball was left to fight alone and collapsed by 1992.
Due to the similar conditions, situations, and outcome of the war, the Soviet-Afghan War is known as 
Russiaball's version of the Vietnam War and the war's end saw the rise of 
Al-Qaedaball and the start of the War on Terror and current War in Afghanistan.
