    — Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Santiago de Compostelaball is a municipalityball and the capital cityball of Galiciaball, located in the Provinceball of A Coruñaball and part of the Comarcaball of Santiago. Santiago de Compostelaball also has a lot of other cityballs named Santiagoball as brother cities.

This cityball has been declared a World Heritage place by the UNESCO since 1985. It's well known for being the one of the three most popular pilgrimage destinations along with Romeball and Jerusalemcube, because according to the tradition, James the Great is in Santiago de Compostelaball. Its most important artistical value is its cathedral, built in 1075 and dedicated to James the Great. The most popular activity here is the Way of St. James, and thousands of pilgrims do it every year.

    History

The history of Santiago de Compostelaball dates back to prehistory, hillfort culture, SPQRball and the supossed finding of St. James the Great. The Asturian king Alfonso II (who was also the king of Kingdom of Galiciaball) gave an order to build the Cathedral of Santiago De Compostela, and from the places around it, the village was built. The way of Saint James marked Galiciaball's history, with many cultural and literary advances from pilgrims who came there.

    Origins

In the territory where the cathedral is right now, there used to be a Roman mansio which was known as 'Assegonia' that existed during the centuries 1 and 5. Its population later disappeared and then was used as a necropolis and was used as a quarry.

The kings of Asturiasball understood the dangers of Galiciaball separating from it so they decided to use some resources to avoid that happening. They attempted to bring gothic culture to make sure cultural unity is kept, and tried to make someone the royal king of Galiciaball. However, the best thing they did was found Santiago de Compostelaball and its cathedral. They took the chance with the current myth about the finding of St. James body. Alfonso II founded the cathedral of Santiago de Compostelaball and the village.

The creation of Santiago de Compostelaball is related to the supossed discovering of St. James' body between 820 and 835, the religious values of his body, its University and nowadays, the capital of Galiciaball.
