Republic of Piratesball was a coalition of pirate crews in Bahamasball and Turks and Caicosball. He had control over Nassauball and the surrounding islands after Englandball abandoned the area in 1706. Republic of Piratesball was destroyed in 1718 when Britishball assigned Woodes Rogers as Governor of Nassau and tasked him with removing the pirates.

    History

    Rise of the Pirates’ Republic

The pirate presence in Nassau began in 1696 when the infamous pirate Henry Avery sailed his ship filled with loot plundered from Indian trade ships into Nassau harbor. He used this ship, loaded with 50 tons of elephant tusks and 100 barrels of gunpowder, to bribe the local Governor into giving him and his crew sanctuary on New Providence Island. This established Nassau as a Haven where pirates could safely operate, drawing in swarms of sea rovers and other ruffians to the town. True pirate rule began after a combined Franco-Spanish Fleet raided Nassau twice, once in 1703 and again in 1706. These attacks caused most of the law abiding english settlers and officials to flee the island, now leaving a majority of Pirates on the island. The pirates established their own “government” on the island, following a Pirate Code of Conduct and voting in their own Pirate Governors. Two pirates and rivals dominated the republic named Benjamin Hornigold and Henry Jennings, both of these captains mentored most other pirate captains on the island, forming a coalition of crews known as the Flying Gang.

    Enemies of Mankind

The pirate problem on Nassau truly got out of hand when the War of Spanish Succession ended in 1713, in which most British privateers were either late to receive the news or refused to accept it, continuing to loot Spanish and French ships illegally. These unemployed privateers flocked to Nassau to swell the numbers of the republic. At its height, Republic of Piratesball could command a small armada of pirate ships to plunder trade routes and raid towns. The governments of the world labeled the pirates of Nassau “Hostis Humani Generis,” or enemies of mankind.

    Fall of the Republic

In 1718, Britishball assigned Woodes Rogers as Royal Governor of Nassau, and gave him the task of expelling the pirates from Nassau. Woodes Rogers did this with a Royal Pardon, hoping to incentivize the pirates into giving themselves up and turn back to a lawful life. 209 Pirateballs took this pardon, surrendering to the British when they arrived on Nassau. Among the pirates who surrendered was Benjamin Hornigold, who was then commissioned by Woodes Rogers to disperse and hunt down the pirates who refused the pardon. Hornigold captured 10 pirates on the 12th of December, 1718 and 9 of them were executed. This act re-established British rule over the island, officially dissolving the Republic of Piratesball. The pirates who successfully fled the fall of the republic continued their operations in other parts of the Caribbean, continuing the Golden Age of Piracy into the 1720’s.
