Phnom Penhball is the capital cityball and the biggest cityball of Cambodiaball. It was formerly (before 1960) known as the ‘Pearl of Asia’, being considered one of the loveliest French-built cities in Indochina during the 1920.
The city was founded sometime before 1372, as a fishing village on the banks of the Tonle Sap, Mekong and Bassac rivers, but the foundation legend was set in 1372.
It was the royal capital from 1432 to 1505 but abandoned for 360 years because of fighting in the area. It wasn’t until 1865 that it became the royal capital and a palace was built. From 1870, the French started expanding the village to a city.
During the Vietnam War, it was used as a base by the Viet Cong and People’s Army of Vietnam. For more than a year, the Khmer Rouge cut off supplies before it was captured in 1975, and the Khmer Rouge were driven out in 1979 by the People’s Army of Vietnam.
