Li Chuball or simply Chuball was a short-lived regime established in Kaifengball by jiedushi (節度使; military governor) Li Xilie (李希烈) in rebellion against Tangball in 784.
After stalemating Tangball's armies, Li Chuball's power slowly declined, making no progress against Tangball throughout 785. In the spring of 786, Li Xilie was poisoned to death by his subordinate Chen Xianqi (陳仙奇), who in turn surrendered Li Xilie's circuit to Tangball, putting an end to Li Chuball's brief existence.[1]
History
Background
Li Xilie was native to Yanzhouball, Liaoningball.[2] Li Xilie became the jiedushi of Tangball's Huaixi circuit (淮西道; located in Henanball) after overthrowing the previous governor, Li Zhongchen (李忠臣), reportedly due to Li Zhongchen's debauchery.[3]
After gaining recognition from Emperor Dezong of Tangball, Li Xilie defeated an effectively independent warlord—Liang Chongyi (梁崇義)—only to become one himself thereafter.
Establishment
In 782, Li Xilie colluded with other prominent jiedushi to rebel against Tangball, including Li Na (李納), Zhu Tao (朱滔), and Tian Yue (田悅). Xilie rebelled against Tangball in 783 and occupied Kaifengball.[4]
Meanwhile, a retired Tangball general, Zhu Ci (朱泚), had captured Chang'anball from Tangball and established Zhu Qinball. Zhu's rebellion lasted until 784.[5]
In an effort to diffuse the situation, Emperor Dezong offered amnesty for the rebels who restored their loyalty to Tangball, excluding Zhu Ci. Out of all the jiedushi involved, only Li Xilie refused Emperor Dezong's offer, and declared himself emperor of a new state of Chuball.[6]
After establishment, Li Chuball attacked Tangball in various prefectures in Henanball and Hubeiball, but all of its offensives ended in stalemate or retreat. Before long, Li Chuball retreated its capital from Bianball to Caiball.[7]
Abolishment
By 785, Li Chuball's power had been effectively curtailed by Tangball's generals and grew less powerful day by day. Emperor Dezong even guaranteed Li Xilie with his life if he surrendered, but Li Xilie refused.
In the spring of 786, Li Xilie took ill from eating beef and was poisoned to death by one of his subordinates—either doctor or general—Chen Xianqi (陳仙奇).[8] Chen Xianqi surrendered the circuit to Tangball after executing the rest of Li Xilie's family.
