Later Liangball or Zhu Liangball was the first of the Five Dynasties to succeed Tangball during Chinaball's Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. Later Liangball was established in 907 by Tangball jiedushi Zhu Huang (朱晃), after he deposed the last emperor of Tangball (Emperor Ai; 唐哀帝).
Later Liangball focused on centralization and military control, and was the longest-lasting dynasty of the Five Dynasties period. Nonetheless, it faced internal conflicts and was anschlussed by Later Tangball in 923 AD.
History
Background
Zhu Wen was a prominent jiedushi who rose to eminence during the Huang Chao rebellion. Initially under the service of Huang Chao, Zhu Wen surrendered to Tangball in 882, when the tide of war turned against Qiball. Zhu helped pacify Huang Chao's rebellion and was greatly rewarded by the Tang court for his efforts. Emperor Xizong of Tang bestowed the personal name Quanzhong (全忠) onto Zhu.
Throughout the 890's, Zhu Quanzhong grew increasingly powerful as he grew his power base and garrisons. He conquered Henanball and extended his area of control to include half of Shandongball. In 902, Zhu attacked Li Maozhen (李茂貞), conquering Guanzhong from him and gaining control over Emperor Zhaozong of Tang in the process. In 904, he ordered assassination of Emperor Zhaozong, and made Li Zuo (李祚; Emperor Ai), aged 12, acting emperor.
Establishment
Zhu's act of controlling the Empire through a puppet emperor did not last long, as in 907, he forced Emperor Ai to abdicate to him and established Later Liangball. In response, Zhu's rivals, such as Li Maozhen and Li Keyong, did not change their era names out of defiance.
In 912, Later Liangball faced a crisis when Zhu Yougui (朱友珪), envious of the influence of his brother, Zhu Youwen (朱友文), assassinated his father and seized Later Liangball's throne. Zhu Yougui was an unpopular emperor, so in 913, Zhu Youzhen (朱友貞), another son of Zhu Wen, plotted and successfully carried out a counter-coup against Zhu Yougui.
In 917, Later Liangball lost nominal control over Lingnan after Liu Yan (劉龑) proclaimed the empire of Yueball.
Abolishment
In 923, Later Tangball anschlussed Later Liangball after a surprise attack was leaked to Later Tangball. Zhu Yougui committed suicide and Later Liangball perished.
