History[edit | edit source]
It was founded in 1976 after disputes with artist Edwin Lipburger and Austrian police after they argued over building permits and restrictions over a spherical house in 1971. He declared himself president, made stamps and currency, and even refused to pay his taxes. 3 years after he founded Kugelmugel, he was arrested. In June 1982, the house was moved into the Prater park, near the Hauptallee, and enclosed by eight-foot-tall barbed-wire fences. Lipburger died in January 2015 but the Republic officially holds a population of over 650 non-resident citizens. The current president is Edwin's son, Nikolaus.
Fun fact: His name literally means "ball bump" as the word "Kugel" means "ball" or "sphere" in German, and the word "Mugel" is an Austrian German expression for "bump" or "hill on a field". As he is literally a sphere house.
