Establishment
The kingdom was founded by Ali Mohammed Khan, an Afghan adventurer.
After 5 years, quarrel arose between him and Safar Jang, the subedar (governer) of Oudh, which led to Ali Mohammed Khan's defeat. He was captured and taken to Delhiball. In 1748 the invasion by Ahmed Shah Abdali allowed Ali Mohammed the opportunity to return to Rohilkhand and re-establish his rule. One of the Rohilla chiefs, Najib-ud-Daula, played an instrumental role in Durraniball winning the Third battle of Panipat against Maratharawr.
Decline
Divison of the realm among the founder, Ali Mohammed Khan's sons led to a confederation-like structure of government with the Nawab of Rohilkhand at its head and the Rohilla Chiefs in charge of their own Rohilla States answering to him especially in regards to military engagements. It was annexed at the close of the First Rohilla War against East India Companyball and OudhRawr.
