    History

    Information

Kapanball was officially born as a 2ball, but soon was given an identity by Ancient Armeniaball in the 5th century. In later years, he was adopted by Persiaball, Russian Empireball, Transcaucasiaball, Republic of Mountainous Armeniaball, Sovietball and Armeniaball. He became cityball for First Republic of Armeniaball in 1918, then was raionball of Armenian SSRball and now modern Armeniaball as city.

    Ancient history and Middle Ages

The area of modern-day Kapanball was first mentioned in the 5th century as a small settlement within the properties of the Siunia Dynastyball. Historically, it was part of the Baghk cantonball of Syunikball, the ninth province of the historic Greater Armeniaball. By the end of the 10th century, the ruler of Syunikball, Prince Smbat II, moved to the town of Kapanball and founded the Kingdom of Syunikball, proclaiming himself a king under the protectorate of the Bagratid Armeniaball.

In 1103, Kapanball was entirely ruined by the Seljuk invaders. After the fall of the Kingdom of Syunikball in 1170, Syunikball and the rest of the historic territories of Armeniaball suffered from the Seljukball, Mongol Empireball, Aq Qoyunluball and Kara Koyunluball invasions, in that order, between the 12th and 15th centuries.

    Iranian and Russian rules

At the beginning of the 16th century, Kapanball became part of the Erivan Beglarbegiball within the Safavidball. By the beginning of the 18th century, Kapanball was associated with the Armenian military leader David Bek, who led the liberation campaign of the Armenians of Syunikball against the Iranians and the invading Ottoman Turks. Bek started his battles in 1722 with the help of thousands of local Armenians who liberated Syunikball. The centre of Bek's struggle was the Baghaberd Fortress northwest of Kapanball and the Halidzor Fortress southwest of Kapanball, where he died in 1728. In 1750, Kapanball became part of the newly formed Karabakh Khanateball. It was turned into a significant urban settlement during Qajarball rule by the end of the 18th century.

In 1813, the territory of historic Syunikball, including the region of Kapanball, officially became part of the Russian Empireball as a result of the Russo-Persian War of 1804–13 and the following Treaty of Gulistan signed between Russiaball and Iranball. In 1828–30, many Armenian families from the Iranian cities of Khoyball and Salmastball migrated to the region. In 1868, it became part of the Zangezursky Uyezdball within the Elisabethpol Governorateball of the Russian Empireball. By the last quarter of the 19th century, Kapanball formed an important urban community for the region as a result of merging several villages together.

    Modern history

Both the Republic of Armeniaball and the Azerbaijan Democratic Republicball claimed Kapanball between 1918 and 1920. As a result of the Sovietization of Armeniaball in December 1920, Kapanball was included in the Republic of Mountainous Armeniaball under the commandment of Garegin Nzhdeh, who fought against the Bolsheviks between 26 April and 12 July 1921. After the Soviet Red Army entered the Zangezur regionball in July 1921, Kapanball, along with the towns of Gorisball, Sisianball and Meghriball, fell under the Sovietball’s rule, where it was administered as part of the Armenian SSRball.

In September 1930, the Soviets formed here the Kafan raionball. In 1936, Kapanball was established as a town, and till 1991 called Kafanball.

Following the independence of Armeniaball in 1991, Kapanball became the centre of the newly formed Syunik Provinceball as per the 1995 administrative reforms of the republic. Many streets bearing the name of Bolshevik activists were changed. The town's central square was renamed after Garegin Nzhdeh, while the central park of the town was named after Vazgen Sargsyan.

During the First Nagorno-Karabakh War, Kapanball was bombarded by artillery coming from the neighboring Zangilan Districtball of Azerbaijanball, causing deaths among the civilian population. This prompted an Armenian operation to capture several nearby Azerbaijani border villages in December 1992.
