Couto Mistoball was an independent microstate on the border between Spainball and Portugalball. The interesting thing about this (well, I mean this is all interesting but the really interesting part) is that both Spainball and Portugalball recognized this micronation as a independent nation.

    History

    Creation and Border Dispute

The creation of Couto Mistoball goes all the way back to the independence of the in 1147. The Kingdom of Portugal was known before as the County of Portugal. The county was created in 868 by the Kingdom of Galicia, which had just united with The Kingdom of Leon. Because of a bad defined frontier the 2 countries had a neutral zone at the town of Santiago de Rubias (Municipality of Calvos de Randín in Galicia, Spainball).

    Organization

The 3 main municipalities of Couto Misto were directed from the town of Toúrem in Portugal. The territory paid anually, until 1834, a direct tribute to the Kingdom of Spain, House of Braganza (Royal house of Portugal until 1853) and as well to directly.

    Treaty of Lisbon of 1864

Spain and Portugal were confused about their border since they had many disputes (like Olivenza) so they signed a treaty that gave south Couto Misto to Portugal and north Couto Misto to Spain.

[...] Portugal waives in favor of Spain all the rights that it may have over the land of the Coto Misto and over the towns situated therein, which by virtue of the division determined by the line described remain in Spanish territory.

Article VII of the 1864 Treaty of Lisbon

    Aftermath

Nowadays, the villages who made up Couto Mistoball lost a lot of population, making them almost unpopulated.

During the Spanish Civil War Couto Misto was in the Nationalist side. No deaths were reported in Couto Misto during the war.  Spain became a dictadorship under Francisco Franco until 1975 when he died, Spain became a absolute monarchy until 1977 during the period known as the transition and the region was given high autonomy, recognition of nacionality and lenguage recognition in 1982.

    Portugese Couto Misto

In 1910 became a republic and the First Portugese Republic was declared, then came Salazar who proclaimed the "Estado Novo and in 1975 Portugal became a republic again and the 2nd Portugese Republic was proclaimed.

    Other notes

There was a neutral road that went through Spain all the to the Town in the Portugese side from which mail was delivered to both Spain and Portugal, this road was neither claimed by Spain or Portugal.
